Could you tell me why sunscreens are so important in Australia and New Zealand?
Sunscreens are applied to prevent ultraviolet rays from the sun affecting your skin and causing sunburn. Not only does sunburn lead to such conditions as skin cancer (Australia and New Zealand have the highest rate of skin cancers in the world), but also it is extremely damaging, resulting in dry and prematurely aged skin.
Sunscreen can be designed to protect the skin from UVB and UVA (often referred to as broad-spectrum sunscreen), or against UVB on its own.
There are two ways that sunscreen protects the skin:
- Physically: where the sunscreen acts as a barrier, and reflects the sun away from the skin, with the most common product being Zinc Oxide Cream.
- Chemically: where the chemical ingredient of the sunscreen will absorb the UV rays without leaving the messy residue of a Zinc Oxide Cream.
All sunscreens must carry an SPF value to indicate the level of protection they offer.
And what does SPF mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which is stated as a number. This number varies from 4 to 30 and indicates the level of protection the sunscreen will provide (30 indicating the highest protection available).
On average skin takes 10 minutes to burn (depending on the strength of the sun on any given day), resulting in damage. The SPF value (SPF x 10 minutes) determines how long a sunscreen will protect the skin from the sun’s rays. Please note, however, that this may vary depending on your skin type and the activity you are performing. For example, swimming would require more frequent application of sunscreen as sunscreen washes off in water.
To ensure that the skin is properly protected, it is important to apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen to clean skin 15 minutes before going into the sun, and reapply it frequently.
Given the harsh nature of the sun, Nutrimetics supports sun awareness and sensible precautions against sunburn, such as wearing a hat and protective clothing, and staying out of direct sunlight at the harshest times (11 am - 3 pm) where possible. Avoid direct sun exposure for babies and young children.
Some questions relating to our Matol Km® product:
When I am down to the last couple of measures of Matol Km®, I find what look like plastic chunks. What are they?
The small objects in the bottom of Matol Km® bottles are actually a mixture of Potassium and Calcium Salt Crystals. The crystals are not water soluble and therefore can often be heard rattling around in the bottom of the bottle. Where possible, if you see the crystals, they should be removed. However, they are safe if swallowed.
Why does one bottle of Matol Km® taste or smell different to another?
Because Matol Km® is blended with many different Botanical Extracts, there can be a seasonal variation caused by the change in climatic seasons. This in turn has an effect on the smell and flavour of the various extracts, which is normal for this type of product.
I have a medical condition. Can I use Matol Km®?
Matol Km® is not harmful to people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or suffering any other medical conditions. However, we always advise that customers consult their medical practitioner before starting to use Matol Km®, to get an accurate decision based on their full medical history.
