Could you tell me why sunscreens are so important in Australia and New Zealand?

Sunscreens are applied to prevent ultraviolet rays from the sun affecting your skin and causing sunburn. Not only does sunburn lead to such conditions as skin cancer (Australia and New Zealand have the highest rate of skin cancers in the world), but also it is extremely damaging, resulting in dry and prematurely aged skin.

Sunscreen can be designed to protect the skin from UVB and UVA (often referred to as broad-spectrum sunscreen), or against UVB on its own.

There are two ways that sunscreen protects the skin:

  1. Physically: where the sunscreen acts as a barrier, and reflects the sun away from the skin, with the most common product being Zinc Oxide Cream.
  2. Chemically: where the chemical ingredient of the sunscreen will absorb the UV rays without leaving the messy residue of a Zinc Oxide Cream.

All sunscreens must carry an SPF value to indicate the level of protection they offer.

And what does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which is stated as a number. This number varies from 4 to 30 and indicates the level of protection the sunscreen will provide (30 indicating the highest protection available).

On average skin takes 10 minutes to burn (depending on the strength of the sun on any given day), resulting in damage. The SPF value (SPF x 10 minutes) determines how long a sunscreen will protect the skin from the sun’s rays. Please note, however, that this may vary depending on your skin type and the activity you are performing. For example, swimming would require more frequent application of sunscreen as sunscreen washes off in water.

To ensure that the skin is properly protected, it is important to apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen to clean skin 15 minutes before going into the sun, and reapply it frequently.

Given the harsh nature of the sun, Nutrimetics supports sun awareness and sensible precautions against sunburn, such as wearing a hat and protective clothing, and staying out of direct sunlight at the harshest times (11 am - 3 pm) where possible. Avoid direct sun exposure for babies and young children.
